The Government yesterday decided to remove 25 army personnel providing security to former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, however replacing them with 25 members of the police Special Task Force (STF).
Rajapaksa had requested the Government to maintain his security detail claiming his life is under threat.
Commenting about the decision, Military Spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said it was done following a policy of the Security Council not to deploy military personnel for VIP security.
He also stated that the replaced STF personnel are trained for VIP security.
