The trade union action taken by the Government Medical Officers Union (GMOA) to protest against the attack on student protesters continued for the second day with the union threatening to further intensify the strike.
GMOA Co-secretary Nalinda Hearth told reporters that they would stop treatment in accident wards and dengue related treatment – which continues at the moment despite the strike- if the Minister tries to portray their strike action as a failure.
“We will stop those only if the Minister pushes us to do so,” explained GMOA General Secretary Navin De Soysa.
The union was set to meet the ministry officials to discuss the situation yesterday. Meanwhile Convener of the Inter-University Student’s Federation (IUSF), Lahiru Weerasekara was arrested by the Police for damaging public property during the protest on Wednesday.
He was arrested after coming out from a press conference hosted by the IUSF in Colombo. Lahiru Weerasekara was produced before a Magistrate and remanded till July 5.
