The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday announced an island-wide strike from 8.00 a.m. today in protest of a number of issues, including the suppression of university students.
The GMOA said they decided to proceed with the strike as there had been no positive response from the authorities regarding the demands made by the organisation. The GMOA claimed that they had informed the President, Prime Minister and Health Ministry regarding tomorrow’s strike action.
The organisation has demanded that a President who is “accepted” should be appointed to the Sri Lanka Medical Council, declare the final decision on the minimum standard gazette for medical faculties and publicise legal documents sent to the South Asia Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) ordering them to halt student admissions and the awarding of degrees.
However, the trade union action will not affect maternity hospitals, cancer hospitals, children’s hospitals, emergency treatment units and dengue treatment units.
