A batch of 1,021 students received Mahapola scholarship awards at this ceremony. The ceremony was organised by the Gampaha District Secretariat and Mahapola Scholarship Trust Fund.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Hemal Gunasekara said that the Mahapola Higher Education Scholarships would be increased from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 5,000 in the near future. The Deputy Minister further said that around 13,500 students have been selected as recipients of the Mahapola Higher Education Scholarships for academic year 2011/12.
Minister of Social Services Felix Perera, Deputy Minister Pandu Bandaranayaka, Western Provincial Council Chairman Sunil Wijerathna, District Secretary J.J. Rathnasiri, Vice Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya Prof. Sunanda Madduma Bandara and Western Provincial Council Members also graced the occasion.
