Former DIG’s son arrested for Sri Lanka businessman’s murder

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested the son of the senior police officer in custody for the contract killing of a millionaire businessman in Colombo in May this year. Former Deputy Inspector General Vass Gunawardena’s son Ravindu Gunawardena was arrested early morning yesterday at a house in Pepiliyana in Colombo district. The police was on the lookout for him after Kaduwela magistrate issued an arrest warrant over the younger Gunawardena’s involvement in the attack on a student of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology in Malabe. The CID reported to Colombo Additional Magistrate Mohammed Sahabdeen that Ravindu Gunawardena was directly involved in the murder and that he had taken away the firearm used for the killing. The victim, Mohamed Shyam, a businessman in Bambalapitiya, was abducted from that area and later, his body with gunshot wounds was found in the Dompe area in the Gampaha district. A business colleague of the 35-year-old victim had contracted the police officers to kill the businessman and the investigations led to the arrest of five persons, including three police officers, over the crime. The contract killing was undertaken for a fee of Rs. 3 million.
