The Government has decided to relocate the Ministry of Foreign Affairs premises from Fort to Jawatta Road, in Colombo 5.
The Republic Building, which currently houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was built in the British colonial era and has been identified as a heritage that should be conserved.
Accordingly the need has risen to relocate the Foreign Ministry premises to a new location.
A proposal made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera to allocate a land of about two acres in Jawatta Road, Colombo, which has been identified to construct a new building for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, received the approval from the Cabinet of Ministers.
