The Minister of Foreign Affairs Ravi Karunanayake yesterday reiterated that the main aim of the Unity Government was to enter a process of constitutional amendment that will form a unitary system of rule where Buddhism is fostered, protected and given its due place and honour.
The Minister pointed out that it was our collective duty and responsibility to safeguard and nourish Buddhism.
Minister Karunanayake expressed these views to the media after participating in the 44th commemoration of the late former sports minister V.A. Sugathadasa. The 44th V.A. Sugathadasa commemoration ceremony was held yesterday in front of the Sugathadasa Statue near the Sugathadasa Stadium.
Addressing the gathering after laying a floral tribute in front of the statue of Sugathadasa, Minister Karunanayake said that the services rendered to the country by the late minister would never be forgotten. He added that it was our duty to remember such services rendered by Sugathadasa to uplift the living conditions of the people in Colombo.
Answering journalists after the ceremony’s conclusion, the Foreign Minister said that the Government was responsible for protecting the war heroes who saved the country. Minister Karunanayake also said that no country could move forward by inciting racism and there was a strong Government in power today for all communities to go forward together.
The Minister further said that he always pointed out the necessity of a complete Constitution that was acceptable to all communities while giving Buddhism its due honour.
