Former Army Commander and Leader of the Democratic Party (DP), Sarath Fonseka says the recent attack on main opposition United National Party (UNP) MPs in Hambantota is a violation of human rights. Fonseka told a news conference that the attack by governing party members on the opposition MPs gave credence to the resolution on Sri Lanka adopted at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva last month. He said that he was prepared to face any international probe by the UNHRC on alleged human rights violations in the country. Fonseka pointed out that his party members and supporters were also assaulted in Hambantota during the recently held provincial council elections by the same people who have now attacked the UNP MPs.
