Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka Mangala Samaraweera Tuesday met with Ukrainian Ambassador in New Delhi accredited to Sri Lanka, Oleksandr Shevchenko.
The Foreign Ministry stated that Samaraweera and Shevchenko during the meeting had discussed the possibility of Sri Lanka sending an investigation team to Ukraine in early May to inquire into the allegations against Sri Lanka’s former Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunaga.
The Ukrainian Government has accused Weeratunga of selling weapons to pro-Russian rebel groups operating in that country.
Weeratunga, a nephew of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has reportedly been involved with the sale of assault rifles and other small arms. Whereabouts of Weeratunga are currently unknown.
