World Challenge is a prestigious global contest conducted by BBC, Newsweek and Shell and last year, Sri Lanka’s Safe Bottle Lamp Project was the outright winner. It is the brain child of Dr. Wijaya Godakumbura, and he collected the award in Netherlands last December. BBC produced a film entitled ‘One year on’ to show the project’s activities following that win. It contains statements from Dr. Ravindra Ruberu, Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Dr. Hemamal Jayawardena, Child Protection Specialist of Unicef and Dr. Godakumbura.
They would be completing the free distribution of their safe lamps, produced with the prize money of US$ 20,000, to the people lacking electricity by the end of this year. They would welcome donations from various organisations to continue their humanitarian work, which is now in the 19th year. Their website www.safebottlelamp.org.
Telecast times of the film on their project on BBC World TV are Saturday, 13 November at 8 a.m. and
2 p.m. and Sunday, 14 November at 8 p.m.
