Twenty-three Local Government bodies that completed their terms by midnight on Thursday will be handed over to a special commissioner, the Provincial Council and Local Government Ministry said.
Accordingly, 17 Municipal Councils including Colombo, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte, Moratuwa, Gampaha, Negambo, Kurunegala, Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Galle, Matara Hambantota, Rathnapura, Anuradhapura and Kalmune are expected to be handed over.
In addition, Kolonnawa Urban Council and five Pradeshiya Sabhas including Kotikawatta-Mulleriyawa, Kadawathsathara-Gangawatakorale, Kundasale, Hambanthota, Suriyawewa will also be given a special commissioner for administration.
A total of 313 Local Government institutions out of 336 have completed their terms so far.
