Ex- Navy spokesman remanded till 19 June

Former Navy Spokesman Commander D. K.P. Dassanayake who was arrested by the CID on 12 July for being involved in the disappearance of 11 youths was remanded till 19 July by Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratna yesterday. 

He was arrested at the Welisara Navy base on suspicion of his connection with aiding and abetting in the abductions and disappearances of 11 youths in 2008.

According to CID investigations, it was revealed that Dassanayake had been connected to the disappearance of the youths by allegedly carried out by a special unit that functioned within the Sri Lanka Navy in 2008.

The missing youths included two Sinhalese, two Muslims and seven Tamils from Kotahena, Mutwal, Dehiwala, Wellawatta and Maradana.

In 2010, Former Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda also had informed the IGP over a suspicious unit that was functioning within the Navy which was responsible for the abductions.

Dassanayake had acted as the Monitoring Officer of that unit which was known as the Special Operations Unit.
