President Rajapaksa has asserted that everyone could today talk about the executive presidency and democracy as the challenges faced by the country had been successfully faced.
The President pointed out that when bombs were exploding countrywide in the past and people were brutally massacred, there were no topics on amendments to the Constitution chalked out from the West or on good governance, instead of the battle to liberate the country from the terrorists.
President Rajapaksa was speaking at a gathering organised by the Vidyodaya Japura Academics Collective. The gathering was organised at the Shalika Grounds in Narahenpita on Sunday.
Among those who joined in this occasion were those who studied from 1965 when it was known as Vidyodaya and later as Sri Jayawardenapura and those who are at present engaged in studies at the University as well as the non-academic staff.
In his address, President Rajapaksa further said that it was the present Government that paved the way for the scholars and academics to come forward.
The President said the country has been developed today and development was necessary for a country. “The Government is ready to mould 100,000 graduates by 2020. A change has taken place in the curricula, to groom graduates needed by the country and the world.”
He said that the universities are vested with the task of moulding the groups needed for the new jobs that would be generated by the investors who had come to the country along with the development. “The technology curricula have been introduced. It is with these developments that an election is taking place.” Expressing his views on the occasion Minister S.B. Dissanayake rejecting allegations that the war was being “sold” today said that a conspiracy was still in place in a more dreadful manner although the country had been liberated from terrorism. He said an untiring effort was being made to overthrow the Rajapaksa regime. He said that he wished to give the message to the country that it needed the leadership of a person of the calibre of the President who could take straight decisions.
Chancellor of the Sri Jayawardenepura University Prof. Sampath Amaratunge said he believed imperialists had now entered the country. “The most dangerous thing is that they now talk Sinhala, visit temples and observe Pansil.”
He said that their hands were full of dollars and euros and the incumbent Vice Chancellor added he strongly believed that academics of a university like the Vidyodaya had a strong feeling towards the country.
