Private sector trade union arm, Inter Company Employees’ Union (ICEU) yesterday held protests outside several private institutions against the proposed amendments to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF) Act.
ICEU Head Wasantha Samarasinghe said the protests were held outside private companies island wide during their lunch hour and at the change of their work shifts.
Samarasinghe said that the police had tried to prevent the protests by threatening the workers in several private institutions, but the workers had continued with their protests as planned.
The protesting employees had called on the government not to implement the proposed amendments to the EPF/ETF Act as it would be detrimental to the private sector employees.
Among the employees from private companies who participated in today’s protest were those attached to Little Lion Associates, Aqua Packaging Company and Paint and General Company. (Colombo Page)
