An Emirates Airline A380 plane flying to Sydney from Dubai with more than 500 people on board has made an emergency landing at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Sri Lanka due to a technical fault, the airline has said.

The aircraft was diverted to Colombo, where it landed safely early on Friday morning, AFP reported.

"Emirates flight EK413 from Sydney to Dubai ... was diverted to Colombo due to a technical fault," the airline has said in a statement without giving any details about the nature of the problem.

A Colombo airport spokesman told AFP firefighting crew and emergency units had been placed on standby.

"We were told of a technical fault with the airplane and they were coming in for an emergency landing," spokesman has said.

According to the spokesman, no one was hurt and an investigation is under way.

The airline said passengers were being transferred to other Emirates flights.
