Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has warned to review the situation in the Galle and Matara municipal areas following complaints received on election law violations by the governing United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

Deshapriya has told the media that complaints have been received of large scale election law violations in the Galle and Matara areas and the Elections Department is therefore compelled to review the situation in the area.

He has warned that uncontrolled and unauthorised campaigns being carried out in Galle and Matara should be stopped immediately.

He has noted that if the campaigns continue the Department would have to determine if the situation was conducive to hold local government elections on Saturday.

Meanwhile, officials from the Department have been quoted in the local media as saying that reports have been called from the Assistant Elections Commissioners in the respective areas.

The Elections Commissioner has already stated that he would not hesitate to postpone elections in any area where there have been serious violations of the laws and regulations.
