Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Faizer Mustapha yesterday said the National Delimitation Committee appointed to making boundaries of electorates has been given time until October to complete their process on delimitations.
Addressing a media briefing Mustapha said the Committee has already concluded delimitation in 16 districts.
“The Local Government elections are not being delayed by me, but we have to wait for the final report of the Committee. The previous delimitation committee and the then minister were responsible for the delay of the election as they had not completed the delimitation process properly,” he told.
However, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said Tuesday that the pending delimitation process being conducted by the National Delimitation Committee will be completed before 15 September.
He added process of making delimitations in most districts including Colombo and Jaffna had been already concluded, but the Committee is yet to complete 40% of delimitations only in Kandy district.
