EC issues directive on LG polls

The Elections Commissioner’s office has informed that all political propaganda for the forthcoming local government elections should cease at 12 midnight next Monday, 14 March, and by next Wednesday, 16 March all political offices set up in connection with the election should be closed down.

Elections will be held on Thursday, 17 March for 235 local government institutions which include 3 Municipal Councils, 30 Urban Councils and 202 Pradeshiya Sabhas.



The distribution of polling cards ended yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Gamini Navaratne said that all arrangements have been made to ensure a free and fair election. He said that the assistance of the Army will also be obtained for deployment along with Police personnel for election related activities.

Navaratne requested that any violent incidents or misbehavior of people on the polling day such incidents should be reported immediately on telephone number 119, so that immediate and appropriate action could be taken.

The Commissioner of Elections also met political parties and the Police yesterday to explain the measures taken to ensure a free and fair election.
