The Government yesterday cautioned the venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha thero saying he may end up like Sarath Fonseka following the 2010 Presidential elections. Youth Affairs and Skills Development Dullas Alahapperuma said that Fonseka was roped in by others to contest the 2010 polls but failed to beat incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa. “Now he (Fonseka) is like a disposed lottery ticket,” the Minister said at a function in Galigamuwa. He said that now there is an attempt to use the venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha thero to do what Fonseka could not do. Last month the outspoken Buddhist monk offered to contest for President if all the opposition political parties reach a consensus. The monk said that the main purpose of contesting for the post would be with the intention of abolishing the Executive Presidency. The monk said that political parties in Sri Lanka should push for the full implementation of the 17th amendment to the constitution and change the electoral system. Sobitha thero said that if a common candidate is nominated for the next Presidential elections then that common candidate must make sure he does not hold on to the post of President.
