The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry is currently discussing with Indian authorities to secure the release of 62 Sri Lankan fishermen from Indian custody.
A majority of the Sri Lankan fishermen in Indian custody have reportedly been produced before court. The Sri Lankan government is now trying to secure their release along with seven trawlers seized by the Indian authorities. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan authorities Wednesday released 23 Indian fishermen who were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan Navy recently. Sri Lanka Navy’s Northern Naval Command yesterday handed over the Indian fishermen to the officials on board an Indian Coast Guard Ship in the seas off Talaimannar. (www.colombopage.com)
