Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), Sajith Premadasa is to commence a campaign to increase the party membership by 100,000. Premadasa has said that he will commence a membership drive island wide.
During a meeting with the party’s local government members in the Matale District, it had been proposed to Premadasa to commence a membership drive and to call for an amendment to the party constitution to give voting rights to local government members.
A previous proposal made by him to the party’s Working Committee to commence a campaign to amend the party Constitution to enable local government members to also vote to elect office bearers had been rejected.
According to Premadasa, there is also a move to form an association of UNP local government members.He has added that the party would also commence an anti-government campaign soon.
