Former UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara currently contesting on the government ticket at the North Western Provincial election has decided to file legal action against UNP parliamentarians Daya Gamage and Harin Fernando for making false allegations against him.
Gamage and Fernando have alleged that Jayasekera had obtained 250 million rupees from the UPFA to join the government, the former UNP Member said in a media release. Jayasekera will sue the two UNP members for Rs. 1 billion as compensation for the damage caused to his reputation by them.
Jayasekera’s lawyer Sudantha Senerath Bandara, is also preparing legal action against UNP parliamentarians Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and Ranjan Ramanayake and six journalists of “ Janarala” newspaper for publishing statements alleging the former UNP MP had taken millions from the government to join. Rs. 500 million has been demanded from each of the respondents as compensation for damage caused to his political goodwill. The UNP Members have been given a period of one week to produce legal responses in this regard, Jayasekera said.
“Several UNP Parliamentarians accuse me that I joined the government after taking a large sum of money amounting to millions. Perhaps, there could be some who joined the government after getting much money. But I did not join the government after taking money from the government. At least, I did not take the advantage of the UNP votes that were cast in favour of me during the previous parliamentary elections. I kept those votes in the hands of the UNP leader before joining the government,” Jayasekera said in Wariyapola recently.
