The damages caused to the properties belonging to the New Magazine Prison in Sri Lanka during the unrest on Tuesday, is estimated at Rs. 7.5 million.
Police Spokesperson SP Ajith Rohana has said that the riots inside the prison complex had caused damages to many areas within the premises.
The prison record room, library and kitchen had been destroyed by the fire that was set by protesting inmates during the clash.
SP Rohana has observed that over a 1,000 suspected drug addicts had been remanded in the New Magazine Prison and they had been responsible for yesterday’s riots.
The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) of the Sri Lanka Police is continuing with further investigations into the incident.
Meanwhile, Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera said that a special committee has been appointed to probe the riots that took place in the prison.
