The Government has decided to set-up a system to crackdown on corruption within local bodies, the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Mustapha said yesterday.
Speaking to reporters at his Ministry, Mustapha said that a new unit would be established in his Ministry to fast-track action against corruption in local bodies.
He said that while there was a system in place to take complaints from the public on corruption, he had obtained approval from the President and the Prime Minister to launch a system where the investigations were fast tracked.
The Minister said that he had also spoken to the IGP on the proposal and he hoped to discuss the matter with the Bribery Commission as well.
He also noted that his Ministry had the mandate to carry out foreign-funded projects in the provinces and focus had been given to the north. (Colombo Gazette)
