Opposition slams police inactionThe Opposition today accused the police of failing to take action against those involved in post-election violence. Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the police at times gives police bail to those arrested over post-election violence. Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Nimal Siripala de Silva said that Opposition members, including those from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), had been attacked and threatened after the elections. He said that some were even unable to report back to work following the elections, owing to threats and intimidation at the hands of Government supporters. The Opposition urged the Government to investigate post-election violence and take action against those responsible and to also pay compensation to those affected by the violence. Nimal Siripala de Silva also urged the Government to withdraw cases filed against Opposition politicians who had been arrested based on false allegations. The Opposition refused to blame President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe over the violence but said that United National Party members on the ground at village level were involved in some of the incidents.
