Court refuses bail to Malaka again

The Colombo Additional Magistrate yesterday rejected to grant bail to the son of controversial Government Minister Mervyn Silva for the second time and ordered to further remand him until 18 November. The Colombo Additional Magistrate Mohammed Sahabdeen again rejected the bail plea by Malaka Silva who was in remand custody on charges of assaulting a foreign couple at a nightclub in Bambalapitiya, Colombo. Counsel Hemantha Warnakulasuriya submitted the bail plea on behalf of the suspect. The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) of the Police arrested Malaka Silva on 1 November following a complaint lodged by a foreign couple at Bambalapitiya Police. He was remanded by the Court till 4 November. The remand was extended till 11 November when the case was heard. According to reports junior Silva had harassed the foreign woman in the nightclub, provoking the woman’s partner. In response, Malaka Silva’s security personal had assaulted the foreign couple, who had received injuries during the assault. The younger Silva is known for getting involved in similar incidents. In July last year, the Minister’s son, who is often mentioned in the media due to brawls, was assaulted by a group at the Odel car park in Colombo. Following the attack he was admitted to the Nawaloka Private Hospital with sharp cut injuries.
