The police obtained a court order banning protests in parts of Colombo and police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the court order was obtained as a result of the Commonwealth summit being held and the arrival of heads of state for the summit.
The police spokesman said that the ban will mainly apply to locations near the Commonwealth venues and the routes used by Commonwealth heads of governments when they arrive in Sri Lanka. He said that anyone violating the court order will be dealt with severely.
The opening ceremony of the heads of government meeting will be held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre while meetings will be held at the BMICH.
Meanwhile, Nawa Sama Samaja party leader Wickramabahu Karunaratne said he had received a copy of the court order. The order had also been delivered to the UNP’s Sirikotha Headquarters. Karunaratne was to stage a protest this evening in Colombo.
