The Northern Province Council (NPC) has appointed a four member committee to look into corruption and fraud allegations against the Chief Minister of the Northern Province C.V. Wigneswaran and four other ministers of the Council.
The decision to appoint a committee to probe the allegations against the provincial ministers was taken during the Council meeting on the suggestion of the Chief Minister that the Council should debate the charges.
However, a majority of members of the NPC pointed out that the Chief Minister holds several ministerial portfolios and area residents have lodged a number of complaints on financial fraud and requests for bribes in writing and orally by area residents against the Chief Minister and the four ministers.
Accordingly a four member committee led by a retired judge was appointed to look into alleged corruption and bribery charges against the five members of the Provincial Council.
