Colloquium on religious tolerance

A colloquium on religious tolerance, peaceful co-existence, secularism and plural society is scheduled to be held at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute, 24, Horton Place, Colombo 7 on 7 January 2014 at 3 p.m. The event is being organised by the South Asia Policy and Research Institute [SAPRI] chaired by Chandrika Kumaratunga. Four world renowned speakers have been invited – they are Asma Jilani Jahangir, a leading Pakistani lawyer and human rights activist; Rajeev Bhargava, a noted Indian political theorist (his works on political theory, multiculturalism, identity politics and secularism have evoked sharp debates); Professor Radhika Coomaraswamy who was the Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women (Dr. Coomaraswamy was until recently the UN Under Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict); and Professor Christophe Jaffrelot, who is a Paris-based French scholar who teaches in American universities. (He is known for his work on Hindu nationalism, caste politics and Dalits in India. He is Director of CERI at Science Po in Paris).
