Human Rights lawyer, activist and anti-graft crusader J.C. Weliamuna will be honoured today with the Citizen’s Peace Award for his tireless efforts to protect the independence of the judiciary during the recent impeachment crisis in the country.
The Citizen’s Peace Award is awarded by the National Peace Council and honours those citizens who have dedicated themselves towards peace and justice.
Attorney Weliamuna founded the Lawyers’ Collective that assumed a lead role in protesting against the impeachment motion brought against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.
The award ceremony will take place today (18) at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute at Horton Place.
This is the third occasion on which the award will be presented. Former recipients were Centre for Policy Alternatives Chief Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu and human rights activist Dr. Nimalka Fernando.
