CID arrests DIG Vaas Gunawardana

Colombo North DIG Vaas Gunawardana was arrested last night by the CID over a suspected kidnapping and murder of a businessman in the Bambalapitiya area. Prior to the arrest, Gunawardana was questioned by the CID and a statement was recorded.



Mohamed Shyam, a businessman in Bambalapitiya, was founded dead with gunshot wounds in Dompe on 22 May after he was abducted from Bambalapitiya. The CID has already arrested four police personnel, including a sub inspector, who were members of the special unit operating under DIG Gunawardena.

Preliminary Police investigations have revealed that the businessman’s murder was a contract killing undertaken for a fee of Rs. 3 million.
