Child Protection Authority receives over 60,000 calls to hotline

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) of Sri Lanka says it has received over 60,000 calls to its hotline on ‘1929’ in the first eleven months of last year. The NCPA has received 61,080 calls to its ChildLine, from January to November 2013, NCPA Chairperson Anoma Dissanayake has said. The NCPA Chairperson has told local media that of the over 61,000 calls received nearly 8,000 were about child abuse but about 1,000 of them were found to be false. Most of the calls the Authority received was for counselling children and the NCPA has taken to address those complaints. The ChildLine on 1929 is open to receive complaints of child abuse or to seek counselling on matters relating to children. The Chairperson added that the Authority is expecting to re-implement the program to ensure the safety of children, who travel in school vans on a request made by the All Ceylon School Van Drivers’ Association. According to Dissanayake every school van driver will be required to first submit relevant details about their hires to the police and obtain a police report. The measure will help to maintain a link between the NCPA and the police about school van drivers, the chairperson has said.
