Chief Prelate of Asgiriya Chapter passes away

Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddha Rakkitha Mahanayake Thero   The Most Venerable Aggamahapanditha Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Rathanapala Mahanayake Thero of the Asgiriya Chapter of Sri Lanka passed away yesterday at the Mount Elizabeth Orchard Hospital in Singapore. The Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero arrived in Singapore last month and had since been receiving treatment at the Mount Elizabeth Orchard Hospital. In consultation with President Maithripala Sirisena, the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, relevant Government authorities, the venerable clergy and the Sri Lanka High Commission in Singapore made arrangements to complete the necessary formalities and fly the remains of the Most Venerable Aggamahapanditha Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Rathanapala Mahanayake Thero back to Sri Lanka last night on flight UL 309. Arrangements were also made for a large number of Sri Lankans, clergy and members of the diplomatic corps in Singapore to pay their last respects to the Most Venerable Thero prior to the transport of his remains to Sri Lanka.  

Sunday National Day of Mourning

Sunday April 12 has been declared a National Day of Mourning to mark the demise of the Mahanyake (Chief Prelate) of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Most Venerable Aggamahapanditha Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Rathanapala Mahanayake Thero. The funeral of the Chief Prelate will take place in Kandy on Sunday.
