Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) announced that it has officially decided to go for power cuts to manage the shortage of electricity production in the country. The power cuts are to be imposed in selected areas without prior notice, CEB sources said.
The country is in a power crisis due to the drop in water levels in the hydropower reservoirs brought about by the delay in the break of the southwest monsoon that brings rains to the catchment areas of the hydropower generation reservoirs.
Meanwhile, the CEB sources say that the Norochcholai coal power plant and the Kerawalapitiya thermal power plant also are undergoing repairs further adding to the power crisis. This is the first time the CEB has decided to go for power cuts since 2002.
