Canada supports livelihood development in Point Pedro

The High Commissioner of Canada to Sri Lanka Shelley Whiting, participated in handover ceremony for livelihood development equipment to beneficiaries in the Point Pedro area as part of an assistance project supported by the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CLFI). Speaking at the event, the High Commissioner reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to assisting in sustainable economic development for the people as a means to furthering efforts of reconciliation after hardships encountered due to decades of war. The project undertaken by the Family Rehabilitation Centre (FRC) in various areas in the north and east includes provision of livelihood support to 60 women headed households. Of the 400 beneficiaries of the project, 240 are women. The project also aims to increase knowledge and skills regarding simple book keeping and account maintenance, the importance of saving and investing for the future. The High Commission of Canada extends support to development and advocacy partners in Sri Lanka through CFLI to undertake projects aimed at improving the lives of communities and promoting human rights, good governance and democratic process in Sri Lanka.
