CA issues notice on UNP Leader over case filed by Maithree, Shiral

By Lakmal Sooriyagoda The Court of Appeal yesterday issued notice on UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Working Committee to appear before Court on 26 September in response to a petition filed by two Provincial Council Members, Maithree Gunarathne and Shiral Lakthilake. The case was taken up before the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice S. Sriskandarajah. Two UNP Provincial Councillors had filed petitions before the Court of Appeal against their expulsion from the Party. Southern Provincial Council Member Maithri Gunaratne and Western Provincial Council Member Shiral V. Lakthilake in their petitions sought the Court to determine or declare that their expulsion from the UNP was invalid, null and void and of no effect in law. They asked the Court to determine and/or declare that they had not ceased to be members of the respective Provincial Councils. They also asked the Court to determine and/or declare that they continued to be members of the respective Provincial Councils. They cited the UNP, its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, its Secretary General Tissa Attanayake, Assistant Leader Joseph Michael Perera, Working Committee Chairman Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, members of the Working Committee including Daya Gamage, A.A.M. Perera PC, Disciplinary Committee Chairman Tilak Marapana PC, its Secretary Asendra Siriwardane, Disciplinary Board Chairman Dinesh Dodangoda, secretaries of the respective Provincial Councils, Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and respective returning officers as Respondents. President’s Counsel Sanjeewa Jayawardena appeared for the petitioners.
