The Government’s Budget has only provided protection for the country’s elite, former UNP Deputy Leader and Member of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya said on Tuesday.
Addressing a media conference, the senior politician said that ordinary people in the country got nothing from the Budget, even though many of them were desperate for economic relief.
“While a section of society struggles to make a living, another elite group is in a different world with Lambhorgini racing cars. It is revealed that they are getting ready to have car races in Colombo and Kandy and revel, closing down roads with sand bags and inconveniencing people,” the UNP MP charged.
He said that the counsel of the Mahanayakes and the opinions of the public were being ignored by those “intoxicated with power”.
Jayasuriya warned that lawlessness was rampant in the country and law enforcement was being prevented from carrying out their duty because of interference from powerful politicians. He said the break down in the rule of law had been aggravated by the abolition of the 17th Amendment.
“ We insist that the Government finds an acceptable solution to this social and political problem. Bring an end to the activities which create lawlessness, ruthless administration and dictatorship in place of democracy,” he said.
