Belarusian parliament ratifies mutual legal assistance treaty with Sri Lanka

The House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus has ratified the mutual legal assistance treaty with Sri Lanka last week, Belarus official news agency BelTA reported. The Memorandum of Understanding on Mutual Cooperation between the Ministries of Justice of Belarus and Sri Lanka and Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters were signed in Minsk on 26 August 2013 during Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s state visit to Belarus. The agreement envisages mutual assistance in preliminary investigation, criminal persecution and court proceedings. Mutual legal assistance implies assistance in getting testimony and receiving legal statements and evidence, identifying people and determining their whereabouts, etc. The assistance will be provided by the Investigation Committee, the General Prosecutor’s Office and the KGB (on the part of Belarus) and by the Ministry of Justice of Sri Lanka.
