Asanga Abeyagoonasekara, Executive Director of the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute participated in the Strategic Studies Network (SSN) Annual Summit that took place from 23 to 25 February in Bangkok, Thailand. The summit is organised by the Near East South Asia Centre for Strategic Studies (NESA) with the theme of ‘(R)evolution’ being used for this year’s program. The summit consisted of two days of plenary panels mixed with strategic conversation sessions and working groups which addressed a wide range of topics and issues.
Abeyagoonasekara chaired the Working Group on Post-Conflict Reconciliation that consisted of representatives from think-tanks of ten nations which included Turkey, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Israel, USA and Yemen. The Working Group will communicate with each other over the next several months to produce a paper entitled ‘Post Conflict Reconciliation, Lessons Learnt’ which will be a policy oriented paper that provides an applied Road Map to reconciliation.
The members of the group will aim to use the experiences from their nations to then create the ‘road map’ to reconciliation that can be applied to nations who are embarking upon and are already in the reconciliation process.
The Kadirgamar Institute also presented a research paper at the Summit entitled ‘Sri Lanka: The Road to Reconciliation’ authored by Research Analyst Sharanya Sekaram.
