Army says no intention to spy on Northern Province Chief Minister

The Sri Lanka Army has no intention or need to spy on people of the Northern Province, military Spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya has said.
Responding to an allegation made by the Chief Minister of the Northern Province C.V. Wigneswaran that he was being spied on by State intelligence units, Brigadier Wanigasuriya told news agency Lankapuvath that Police officers have been assigned routinely for the Northern Province Chief Minister’s security
However, there are no Army officers assigned to provide security to the CM, the Military Spokesperson said.
Wigneswaran has said that several persons posing as media men photographed him during a meeting with the German Ambassador to Sri Lanka last week in Jaffna.
Addressing the convention of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), at Vavuniya on Sunday, the Chief Minister has said that the Sri Lankan Army was collecting all kinds of data on the people of the province, including a person’s “body language” with the help of Israeli technology.
During his speech, Wigneswaran has reportedly urged the party youth to collect information on the deployment of the Army in the north, their numbers, location, the amount of land they occupy and the kind of activities in which they are involved.
However, he has cautioned against reviving separatism and violence as these are “not suited to the emerging conditions in the world and had failed to deliver the goods in the past”.
