Anoma complains to Commonwealth about expropriation bill

National List parliamentarian of the opposition United National Party (UNP) has complained to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) of the government’s alleged move to intimidate opposition legislators through new regulations.

National list MP Anoma Gamage has written to CPA General Secretary Dr. William F. Shija that she was formally complaining about the government’s move to acquire underperforming businesses which she calls as an attempt by the Sri Lankan government to suppress and oppress opposition legislators.

The letter alleges that the government move is a violation of her fundamental rights. Jayalath Jayewardene, UNP MP handed over Mrs. Gamage’s letter to Mr Shija in London.

Gamage is a director of the Sevanagala Sugar Industries Ltd., which has been listed by the government as one of the 37 enterprises that are to be acquired under the proposed legislation.

Gamage’s husband, Opposition Leader of the Eastern provincial Council, Daya Gamage, owns the Sevanagala Company.
