German Ambassador Juergen Morhard
25 years ago on 3 October, 1990, 11 months after the wall came down, history surprised us with Germany’s unification.
The yearning for freedom of the oppressed had deprived the oppressors of their power. In Gdansk and Prague, in Budapest and Leipzig, the downtrodden stood up. What had been torn apart grew together. Germany became one. Europe overcame the division between East and West.
On the Day of German Unity, we celebrate what we have achieved and created with the support of our friends. We see a Germany that has a strong economy and is respected worldwide. We see a vibrant democracy in which confident citizens resolve disputes peacefully and look pragmatically for solutions. The joy we experienced in recent years also gives us the strength to take on responsibility in the world in cooperation with our allies and partner countries. We Germans actively foster international understanding, as well as peace and human rights, in Europe and in this shared world of ours.
While there is no single model for reunification, our experience can serve as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through strong leadership and a readiness to pursue and achieve a goal that envisions a better future for all people.
Happy Day of German Unity!
