  • Calls for Lanka to live up to its other international commitments after elections
  • Hails Govt-TNA for agreeing to work together
  • Will of the people have been reflected at election, says New Delhi
]Hailing the Northern Provincial Council election last Saturday as a demonstration of the peoples’ commitment to democratic values, the Government of India yesterday called for the full implementation of the 13th Amendment and beyond in terms of a political solution for the minority Tamil community in Sri Lanka. “The Government of Sri Lanka has honoured its commitment to the international community to hold elections to the Northern Provincial Council,” the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday. New Delhi said it looks forward to the implementation of the Government’s other important commitments made to the international community; “including the full implementation of the 13th Amendment and going beyond it,” the statement said. India said it was satisfied by the positive statements made by both the Government and the TNA on their willingness to work together for the progress of the people of the Northern Province. “We would urge both sides to engage constructively, in a spirit of partnership and mutual accommodation, so that the urgent needs of the people of the Northern Province, which has recently emerged from the throes of a thirty-year long armed conflict, are addressed with a sense of urgency and purpose,” the Indian Government statement said. New Delhi believes only such a cooperative approach will pave the way for genuine reconciliation between the communities involved, it said. (DB)
