A colloquium on Secularism in South Asia on 7 January

The Colombo based South Asia Policy Research Institute has invited four eminent scholars for its colloquium on Religious Tolerance, Peaceful Co-existence, Secularism and Plural Societies in South Asia. The event is scheduled to be held at the Committee room C of the BMICH on 7 January 2014 at 3 p.m. for invitees only. One of the four world renowned speakers invited is Asma Jilani Jahangir, the leading Pakistani lawyer and human rights activist. The second speaker is Professor Rajeev Bhargava a noted Indian political theorist. His works on political theory, multiculturalism, identity politics and secularism have evoked sharp debates. He is the head of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in New Delhi and is currently working on a book on Secularism. He has contributed to several international books and journals including the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy and the Oxford Handbook of Political Theory. The third speaker is Professor Radhika Coomaraswamy who was the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women. Dr. Coomaraswamy was until recently the UN Under Secretary-General and Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to study the consequences of Children in Armed Conflicts. The fourth speaker is Dr. Christophe Jaffrelot a Paris-based French scholar who is a Director of The Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) affiliated to the Institute of Political Science – the prestigious Faculty of political Science of the University – Paris Sc Po. He also teaches at American universities. Dr. Jaffrelot has written often about nationalism in India and Pakistan, and the political roots of Hindu-Muslim conflict. The South Asia Policy and Research Institute (SAPRI) is Chaired by Chandrika Kumaratunga.
