Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe called a special review meeting yesterday on those who have been imprisoned for wrongs committed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. The meeting was also attended by Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry and Public Security Minister Tiran Alles.
In a release, the Ministry of Justice said the group discussed the investigations carried out in relation to the prisoners while information such as their incarceration time period and steps taken for their release were also reviewed.
Senior officials representing the Attorney General’s Department, the Criminal Investigation Department and the Department of Prisons provided updates on the information requested. The officials presented information on prisoners who continue to be in custody and those released in recent times.
It was decided that discussions would be held between the Attorney General’s Department, Criminal Investigation Department, Department of Prisons, Sri Lanka Police, and Counter-Terrorism Investigation Division on future steps on prisoners still incarcerated under the PTA.
The meeting was attended by senior officials of the relevant Government institutions, including Secretary to the Ministry of Justice Wasantha Perera, Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratne, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, former Chief Justice Asoka de Silva and Senior Deputy Solicitor General Haripriya Jayasundara.
