The Welisara Naval Base resumed operations today, having been under lockdown since April after a Navy personnel tested positive for COVID-19.
According to the Sri Lanka Navy, the Welisara Naval Base will commence operations in several stages as per health guidelines. Permission was recently granted by Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe to recommence operations at the naval base.
On 24 April, the Sri Lanka Navy issued a statement that the Welisara Naval Base was under lockdown and that 4,000 Navy personnel and their families were isolated within the camp and tested for COVID-19.
While a total of 901 Navy personnel have tested positive for COVID-19, 785 have recovered so far. According to the Epidemiology Unit, there have been no COVID-19 patients at the Welisara Navy Hospital since 18 June.
