Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith
Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, has requested all Members of Parliament to work collectively to vote for a President who can realise the people’s expectations, setting aside corruption, party politics, enticing MPs with money and being true to their conscience.
In a letter to all MPs, the Cardinal requested the House to seize the opportunity to ensure maximum participation in fulfilling the aspirations of the people, considering it a historic moment.
The letter also states that more than two million citizens are waiting for this crucial decision for the country’s future, in a rare occasion where a President with Executive powers has to relinquish power.
The Cardinal also stated that there is fear among the people that the elected public representatives will reach a decision that is against the will of the people.
In this backdrop, he argued that self-respect and popular will are less important than gaining temporary political power.
