With the intention of conducting the SLPP Presidential Election campaign in a carbon-sensitive and environmentally-friendly manner, Project ‘Nidahase Husma’ (Breath of Freedom) was launched recently by Viyath Maga, under the chairmanship of Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Through this project, measures were taken to minimise the carbon dioxide emission caused by the election rallies, and to manage the biodegradable waste from the campaigns.
At the end of the election, certification from an independent authority will be obtained, accrediting that the carbon emission of the overall election campaign was at a zero level. This is a ‘first-of-a-kind’ initiative in the history of elections, and is being conducted under the advice of renowned environmentalist and former University of Colombo Zoology Department Head Vidya Jyothi Professor Sarath Kotagama, and other environmental experts.
Taking another step in this historic journey, 550 trees were planted on 28 October by Tamil youth in Jaffna to coincide with the Presidential Election rallies in the Northern Province.
SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa handed over saplings for this initiative to the youth of Jaffna.
