The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday approved the proposal submitted by Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris to establish video evidence recording units for child abuse victims in every province. These units will be established within hospital premises.
At present video recording is available only at the National Child Protection Authority.
The Government said evidence given by children subjected to various kinds of abuse is important for the judicial process.
Since such victimised children have to face various inconveniences in providing evidence before the court publicly, the legal system has been furnished with provisions to take video recordings subject to provisions in Evidence (Special Provisions) Act No. 32 of 1999.
