Housing, Construction, and Cultural Affairs Minister Sajith Premadasa yesterday said that the Archaeology Department had been instructed to conduct investigations into the vandalism of Buddha statues in Mawanella and take action to assist in the restoration.
The Central Cultural Fund had also sent several officials to inspect the four sites, a statement released by the Ministry said.
“It is clear from initial inquiries that these are not archeologically important or historic statues but as they were worshipped by the people in the area, their importance cannot be dismissed. The funds needed to repair these statues have been estimated and the repairs are expected to be carried out soon,” the statement from Minister Premadasa said.
Premadasa also called on the public to stay calm and act in a responsible manner given the sensitivity of the situation.
